BRADING TOWN 7 v 2 Fawley AFC.

Brading prepared for Saturday’s big FA Cup game, with a 7-2 thrashing of Fawley AFC in the Hampshire Senior Cup.

Steve Brougham’s major decision before the game was who was playing in goal?? Gareth True was unavailable and reserve keeper Darren Plumbley was still out with a dislocated ankle. Brougham turned to the experience of  ‘A’ team manager, and Brading goalkeeping legend, Steve Lawton. He also, had to do without Ollie Fleming with a neck injury, so the ever versatile Will Quigley moved to centre half and Jason Ince to right back. Giancarlo Giancovich was back after missing last Saturday’s game and replaced Ollie Buckett.

In front of a sparse crowd ( England on TV ) Brading were quickly into their stride and opened the scoring within three minutes. Appell and Morris linked up on the right before Morris crossed the ball towards Levrier on the edge of the six yard box, with his back to goal LEVRIER cleverly back-heeled the ball past the wrong footed Fawley keeper. Six minutes later it was 2-0 when MORRIS was sent clear through the middle, he confidently drew the keeper before slotting the ball past him. On the quarter hour mark it was three, Prezpolewski went on a mazy run down the left, leaving three Fawley defenders in his wake before cutting the ball back to allow LEVRIER to finish with a first time shot.

Brading took their foot off the pedal for the next 20 minutes and let Fawley back in to the game with two goals. The first was after a good run from a Fawley forward…. ( the home side failed to get their tackles in ), the second a strike from outside the box, (allowing the forward time to turn )  that found the bottom corner.

As half-time approached Brading got back in the driving seat, a penalty was awarded when Appell was brought down by the on rushing keeper. PREZPOLEWSKI  stepped up to send Parker the wrong way. HT 4-2.

 The second half started with another penalty, this time Jones was brought down in the box. PREZPOLEWSKI once again stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way and make it 5-2.

Just after the hour mark it was six, GIANCOVICH burst into the box and slipped the ball past the keeper as he fell to the ground following a defender’s challenge. The Romans created a number of chances after this, but the Brading supporters had to wait to two minutes from the end for their seventh goal of the night, but it was worth the wait. The goal came after Lawton proved his agility in making a fine one handed save resulting in a corner.

The Fawley corner was too deep and was picked up byLevrier who broke down the right before slipping the ball to Morris. He fired in a low cross towards the far post where PREZPOLEWSKI timed his 80 yard run perfectly to fire the ball home and complete a well deserved hat-trick. Bring on Swindon Supermarine!!!! FT 7-2.

Hartley Wintney 0 v 1 BRADING TOWN.

Match report from WES ESSEX, at last!!

Brading Town continued their winning run with 1-0 win away at Hartley Wintney, in the 1st qualifying round of the FA Vase.
 
The last time Brading visited Hartley Wintney was three years ago in the Hampshire Senior Cup when the Romans won 7-1 with a hat-trick from Sam Dye. The ground had noticeably improved since, with a new stand along one side, and with it a side who only the previous week drew with last year’s Vase semi-finalists Whitehawk in the FA cup. The Romans made only one change from the side that beat Blackfield and Langley on Bank Holiday Monday, Joe Rayner returning for the unavailable Giancarlo Giancovich.

The game kicked off with the home side exerting early pressure, but it was Brading who opened the scoring after only 4 minutes. A corner from the left was partially cleared to the edge of the box, Levrier headed the ball goal-wards and as the Hartley Wintney keeper came to collect the ball, JONES nipped in to head the ball home. The next 20 minutes saw the visitors dominate and they should have added to their lead. The first opportunity fell to Ince, who cut inside before unleashing a fierce strike from the edge of the box, which was heading towards the bottom left corner of the net until the keeper scrambling across his line, managed to push the ball round the post. Minutes later Jones wriggled passed three defenders, but his shot was saved again by the keeper. Jones was running the home side ragged and a ball over the top sent him free down the left, he looked up to notice the keeper off his line, a delicate chip beat the keeper, but dropped just over the bar.

The chances were piling up and Rayner found himself unmarked at the back post from a free-kick, but headed wide. As the half wore on Brading begun to take the foot off of the throttle and allowed Hartley Wintney to get back in to the game, although the closest they came to scoring  were two long range efforts that failed to test keeper True.HT 0-1.

The second half was only a minute old when the hosts almost grabbed an equaliser, the impressive substitute Winters, got clear on goal, rounded True, but was driven wide giving the Brading defence enough time to get back and clear the danger.

The half turned into a scrappy affair after this, although Brading were still creating chances with Jones, Rayner and Appell all going close. The Romans made their first substitution midway through the half bringing on Morris for Ince and their second soon after, Sunsburg replacing Levrier. Sunsburg’s physical presence was immediate, earning a yellow card within two minutes of coming on, following a melee on the half-way line. With twelve minutes left the home side were reduced to ten men when Thorme was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Simon Armstrong came on for his season’s debut and almost scored with his first touch, he got away down the right, but his shot went wide. In the final minute the visitors could have wrapped the game up, good work from Morris down the left, ended with him cutting the ball back into the path of Appell, but he blazed the ball over from 6 yards out.

The final whistle came as a relief to Brading, they should of won by four or five, but the positive out of the game is that even if they aren’t at their best, they still keep winning.  FT 0-1. M

BRADING TOWN RES 4 v 2 GKN.

Goals from Danny Vale, Dave Moore, Nathan Lewis & Nathan Barsdell, gave what was in the end, a comfortable win. The 1st half was fairly even, with GKN taking the lead twice… with some help. Brading went in at half time, 1v2 down… a score line that did no justice at all, as they missed numerous golden opportunities to finish the game.

The 2nd half was almost a one way procession as Brading created, and missed chances galore. GKN were also aided by their keeper, who had a very good game. On another night Vale & Henderson would have had at least 3 a piece.. the woodwork was also given a torrid time. Good to see Armstrong the Junior come on and showboat his skills, another player that has come thro the U16′s.

Thankfully WES ESSEX has returned from Slimmers-World, and as a show of good faith, I have loaned him a “medium” size shirt!

Match Report..

Brading Town maintained their 100% Wessex League start, thanks to 3 second half goals in a 3-2 win over Blackfield & Langley.
 
For the first time in three games manager Steve Brougham had to make changes to his outfield starting line-up. Club captain Joe Rayner failed a late fitness test after suffering a rib injury on Saturday and Jack Morris was having a trial for Barnet FC . Giancarlo Giancovich dropped in to midfield to allow Kyle Levrier to partner Scott Jones up front and Jason Ince replaced Morris on the right.

Brading elected to kick up the slope in the first half and started slowly with Blackfield dominating the early proceedings. The visitors nearly went ahead in the 8th minute when True had to make a fine save with his legs. Brading then came close to scoring themselves when a free-kick from the right was met by the head of Jones, but the keeper easily gathered. This was an isolated attack as the away side continued to push forward and Przepolewski was called upon on two occasions to make vital challenges.

On the half hour, the goal Blackfield had been threatening finally came. A free-kick was given away just outside the box, centre of goal, Hartmann stepped up and curled the ball over the wall into the net. HT 0-1.

 The second half saw Brading flying out the stalls and within a minute they were level, JONES slipped the ball past the keeper after the ball had bounced about in the penalty box. The Romans were now playing with confidence and at last took a grip of the game. Fifteen minutes from time the home side took the lead for the first time, and it was well worth the wait, GIANCOVICH picked the ball up 30 yards out and with only one thing on his mind, hit a screamer in to the top corner, giving the keeper no chance.

Five minutes later it was 3-1, LEVRIER arrived unmarked into the box, to slide the ball past the stranded keeper. The last few minutes became tense when  Hartmann scored his second after running through the centre of Brading’s defence. With seconds remaining the visitors created an opportunity to level the scores, but True came out quickly to block and smother the ball. FT 3-2.

Corsham Town 0 v 1 BRADING TOWN.

A solitary Ollie Buckett goal ten minutes from time, kept Brading Town’s FA Cup dreams alive in a hard fought win at Corsham Town.

The Romans made the two hour trip to Wiltshire looking for a place in the 1st qualifying round of the FA Cup, for the second year running. Their opponents Corsham Town, were sitting top of the Western League Premier Division, after an unbeaten start in the league. They only got through the last round thanks to their previous opponents, Calne Town playing an ineligible player.
Steve Brougham started with the same side that demolished Alton Town the previous week, with Kieran Ford, Jason Ince and Kyle Levrier on the bench.

Brading kicked off with the wind at their backs, but they started slowly and were soon under pressure from their more direct opponents, who earned a number of early corners. Fortunately, the central defensive partnership Fleming and Stuber dealt well with the aerial threat. They were thankful for a fine save from True in the 20th min, when he got his fingertips to a goal-bound shot to deflect it round the post. It took 35 minutes for the visitors to carve out their first real opportunity, Morris found space on the right to clip in a cross which was met by the unmarked Rayner, but his header went wide. Brading were now waking up and Buckett had a deflected shot that needed a smart save from home keeper, diving to his right.

Corsham went even closer to taking the lead at the other end, when Moore’s header from a corner smacked the crossbar and went over. It was becoming end to end in the final minutes of the half and the Roman’s Scott Jones, almost scored the goal of the season, a defender’s clearance looped in the air and with Jones facing his own goal, he acrobatically attempted an overhead kick which went inches past the post. With the half-time whistle approaching Brading had their last chance of half when Appell’s free-kick from the left, was met by Fleming at the far post, but he couldn’t get enough of  his head on it and it ended in the side netting. HT 0-0.

The second half started the same as the first, with the home side looking for the long ball and the Romans counter attacking on the break. Midway through the half a nasty foul on Giancovich earned Brading a free-kick 30 yards out. After lengthy treatment for Giancovich, Przepolewski stepped up to fire a free-kick along the ground, it looked in all the way, until the Corsham keeper somehow got his hand to it at full stretch, and kept the ball out.

The Romans made their first substitution a minute later bringing off Giancovich and replacing him with Levrier. Brading started to get on top, their opponents unable to deal with the two pronged attack of Levrier and Jones. Finally, with ten minutes remaining the visitors took the lead. A cross from the right was cleared to the edge of the box where Przepolewski was waiting to hit a first time shot. His shot struck a Corsham defender, but landed in the path of BUCKETT  in the penalty box, who cracked the ball into the roof of the net. The final minutes saw Corsham throwing everything at Brading, but the Romans held firm to earn an away tie at  Zamaretto Premier Division side, Swindon Supermarine. FT 0-1.

A tale of two half’s… Brading Town Res dominated the opening 45 mins and the game should have been all over by the break. Brading spurned half a dozen good chances, but stiil led 2 v 0 at h/t. St. Helens came out more determined after the break, as they attempted to claw their way back into the game.

It seemed that the young Brading side were believing their recent good write up’s, as they sat back, seemingly believing the game was theirs. Although the Goose Islanders worked hard, they were not creating any chances. Ruck was not tested at all, until the Saints snatched a goal with their only shot at goal, in the entire match.

The moral of this story is…. don’t believe you have won anything on the back of a couple of good performances….

Brading Town “A” opened their league account with a convincing defeat of Ryde Saints Res. With the vast majority of the side, under 18. Neale & Rudd added the experience, plus Henderson, who is looking for match fitness after returning from a broken ankle.

Brading could have scored many more but for a good display from the Saints goalie, plus several missed chances. Injury to Rudd & Neale forced them to be subbed. Joe Phelps in the Brading goal acquitted himself well, when required.

Brading Town 5 v 1 Alton Town.

Brading Town carried on where they left off on Tuesday night, with another scintillating, goal-scoring performance, beating Alton Town 5-1 at the Peter Henry Ground.

The Romans went into the game with the one change from the starting eleven that comprehensively beat Romsey, Gareth True returning from injury in place of Darren Plumbley.

Brading started the game kicking up the slope in the first half and it only took them 8 minutes to open the scoring. The ball found it’s way to Morris on the right and he put in a low cross finding Buckett in space near the penalty spot. BUCKETT controlled the ball, looked up and the fired the ball into the roof of the net with aplomb. Fifteen minutes later it was all square. The ball was floated towards the edge of the six yard box, after a free kick was awarded to the visitors wide on the right, True went up to catch the ball, but under pressure failed to hold on and ball fell kindly to White who had the simple task of sticking the ball into the net.

The remainder of the half saw both sides with chances to take the lead, but Brading re-took the lead with three minutes remaining. It was Morris again, who provided the opportunity, his cross from the right towards the back post was nodded back by Rayner into the path of JONES, who slotted the ball home from close range. HT 2-1.

The second half was barely ten minutes old before the home side increased their advantage and what a superb goal it was. A poor clearance from the Alton keeper was picked up by GIANCOVICH, some 40 yards out, with the goal keeper back pedalling, he chipped the ball over his head and into the top corner of the net. Minutes later it was four and again it was that man GIANCOVICH, as he was put through clear on goal, with keeper advancing slid the ball past him into the corner of the net. With Brading looking comfortable manager Brougham brought on his three substitutes, Ford, Ince and Levrier. The Romans were in total control, but had to wait to a minute before the end for the fifth. INCE picked up the ball on the right before moving inside and unleashing a fierce drive from the edge of the box, giving the keeper no chance. FT 5-1.

Oakfield FC 1 v 2 Brading Town Res.

A top class result for the reserve side against an experienced Oakfield side. Not many will take 3 points at Oakers pitch. 2 goals from Danny VALE gave Brading the points.

Manager Chris Hitchcox, was chuffed with the result & the performance of his side, and stressed it was a TEAM victory.

With players such as Hitchcox jnr, Phipps, Henderson & Hayward not available for this game, it shows the strength of the reserve squad. Plus 1 or 2 in the “A” squad who are looking to force their way in.

Romsey Town 0 v 4 BRADING TOWN.

Brading Town progressed to the next round of the FA Cup last  night, with a stunning 0-4 win in their replay at Romsey Town.

Steve Brougham made four changes from the starting line-up that played in the 1-1 draw on Saturday. Keeper True was suffering from a ‘dead leg’, so Darren Plumbley came in for his first game of the season. Scott Jones, Ollie Buckett and Jack Morris who all did well coming on as substitutes at the weekend, replaced Levrier, Ince &  Ford.

The first chance of the game fell to the home side, a corner was partially cleared to the edge of the box, a first time shot through the crowded box was well saved by Plumbley. From that stage on, it was all Brading as they took the lead after seven minutes. A long ball down the right looked to be ushered out for a goal kick, but Giancovich  never gave up on it and won the ball near the by-line, he looked up and cut the ball back to the penalty spot, where JONES thumped the ball  home, much to the delight of the Scott Jones fan-club in the stands.

It was all Brading as Giancovich and Jones caused all sorts for the Romsey back four, and it was no surprise when they increased their lead after 22 minutes. A clearance down the left was pounced on by JONES who left his marker for dead, before chipping the ball over the advancing keeper.

Two minutes later it was 0-3 when an attempted clearance from the Romsey keeper was blocked by GIANCOVICH and the ball rolled into the net. Jones could have scored another three before the interval, firstly a lob over the on-rushing keeper dropped just the wrong side of the bar, he then had a shot well saved by the keeer, and just before half-time a firm cross from Appell was met by the flying head of Jones, but the ball went over the ball. HT 0-3.

Eight minutes into the second half Brading added a fourth. Good work from Buckett down the left, ended with a hanging cross towards the back post, the keeper jumped up to catch the ball under pressure from Appell, the ball was dropped, leaving APPELL to poke it over the line.

The Romans were firmly in charge with everyone in the side, from the keeper through to the front two, were working hard and doing the job they we asked to do. Midway through the half skipper Rayner almost added a fifth when he met a corner on the volley, but a combination of keeper and a defender on the line kept it out. All three substitutes were used in the final 20 minutes with Ford, Levrier and Ince coming on for Jones, Morris & Appell.

There was still time for Buckett to force a low save from the keeper with a good run and shot from the edge of the box. The final whistle could not have come soon enough for the Romsey players, as they quickly left the field. This was a great win for Brading, described by manager Brougham after the game as the best performance by his side since he took over the management two years ago. FT 0-4.

Brading Town Res 3 v 0 St Helens.

Brading moved comfortably into the semi’s with a relatively ” easy ” win over the Goose Islanders. From the off Brading controlled the game, and played some lovely 1 & 2 touch football. St. Helens struggled to keep with the pace Brading were setting. Only some “solid” defending kept Brading at bay. Referee Fothergill was being kept busy as St. Helens attempted to knock Brading out of their stride. Brading keeper, veteran Steve Lawton was almost a by stander.

Eventually, Scott Lawson opened the scoring, from this point the game deteriorated as ill discipline came to the fore, as yellow & red cards were rightly issued.

Further goals from James Ranson & Danny Vale, sealed Brading’s win. Sadly the game will be remembered for the red & yellow cards, and not for Brading’s football.

A plus was the substitutes appearance of Jus Henderson, after almost a full season out with a broken ankle.

Brading Town 1 v 1 Romsey Town.

Brading Town grabbed a late equaliser to take this Extra-Preliminary round FA Cup tie back to Romsey, on Tuesday.
 
Steve Brougham made one change from the side that won away at Laverstock on the opening Saturday of the season, bringing back Fleming into the heart of the Brading back four, replacing Phelps.

Brading kicked down the slope in the first half on an excellent playing surface, in front of a decent crowd. The early stages were fairly even with neither keeper being really tested. The first scoring opportunity fell to the visitors after 20 minutes, when a cross from the right was met with a powerful goal-bound header, but keeper True produced a stunning one handed save to keep the ball out. Moments later it was Brading’s turn to try and open the scoring. Giancovich  was sent clear on goal and with the keeper advancing elected to slip the ball to Ford on his left, but as Ford slotted the ball home the Assistant’s flag went up for offside.

As the half-time approached the Romans had one final chance to score when a free-kick was awarded on the edge of the box. Przespolewski strode up to take it and the ball curled round the wall, but safely into the arms of the keeper. HT 0-0.

Brading looked the better of the two sides at the start of the second half, but True had to be at his best, when diving full length to hold on to a low strike from just outside the box. On the hour mark Brading made their first substitution bringing Jones for Ince. On 65 minutes Romsey controversially took the lead, a visitor player appeared to control the ball with his hand before crossing into the box for De’ath to stab home.

Almost straight after the restart Brougham made a double substitution bringing on Buckett and Morris. Brading were now piling on the pressure and Jones was making a nuisance of himself in the box and was involved in two great chances. He dived bravely to head the ball between defenders, the ball dropped for Fleming, but his first time strike went over the bar. Then a scramble in the box ended with the ball rolling off Jones’s leg and running inches past the post.

Finally, the goal the Romans had been threatening came with five minutes left. The ball was whipped in from the left towards the back post, where Jones and Giancovich were in space and GIANCOVICH took responsibility to slide the ball past the keeper. The last five minutes were frantic with both sides looking for the winner and just before the final whistle Romsey had a great opportunity to clinch the victory, but the ball was blazed over the bar.

The draw means a replay at Romsey on Tuesday night with the winners facing a trip to Wiltshire to face Western League First Division side Calne Town.

Ryde Saints 0 v 3 Brading Town “A”.

 A tremendous effort from what was mainly an under 18 side.

Brading Town “A” will now meet Seaview in the final, which will be played at St. George’s Park, Newport.

Brading Town “A” continued their pre-season preparations with a convincing 0-3 win over Ryde Saints 1st team at Pell Lane.

With numerous players unavailable due to work, injuries, cup-tied and holidays, the side had one or two players playing out of position, but that what these games are for.

Paul Davis was outstanding in the centre of the back four with James Woodhouse playing in a new central midfield position alongside Aaron Burford.

From the start Brading dominated the game and played some excellent attacking football. A mixture of poor finishing and good goalkeeping from the Saints keeper, kept the scores level until 10 mins before half-time, when Rudd’s thumping header came back off the bar and CLIFTON managed to force home from close range.

Defending the bottom goal in the second half, Brading still comtinued to play some good football and more than coped with what Ryde Saints had to offer. It came as no surprise when Brading doubled their advantage, Clifton was sent clear and was brought down by the Saints keeper, the referee decided that a penalty and a yellow card was sufficient punishment, when many at the game, including the Ryde Saints supporters thought it was a red card offence. NEALE calmly sent the keeper the wrong way and the game was well and truly in our hands.

The lad’s work rate took it’s toll, and all three substitutes were needed, all 3 did a great job when they replaced the 3 weary players who came off. Saints had a 10 min spell when they tried to get back into the game, but the defence held firm and denied them on several  occasions. The one time they got through, they were  denied by an excellent save from Ruck.

With the clock running down Brading sealed victory with a quite stunning goal. MacIntosh played a ball down the right channel to substitute Adie Lawton, who played a superb ball over the Saints defence to NEALE, his first touch was superb, he then flicked the ball over the head of the last defender, took a touch, and finished superbly into the bottom corner.

An excellent all round team performance with many, many positives.

NO man of the match, as they were all outstanding, to a man and boy!!
