Fareham Town 2 v 0 BRADING TOWN.

As reported by WES ESSEX.

Brading Town suffered their fourth successive defeat following a 2-0 away defeat at the hands of an impressive Fareham Town side.

Steve Brougham once again was forced into taking only a 13 man squad across the Solent with a number of players unavailable, including Dave Greening, Will Quigley, Justin Henderson, Danny Hatcher, Roger Roper & Simon Armstrong. Adam Sunsburg was back on the bench after a two month absence.

On an uneven surface The Romans were soon on the back foot and could have gone a goal down within 20 seconds when McCormack was called upon to a save following a defensive mix up. A major worry for the visitors in the opening minutes was the fitness of  Raynor who went down on three occasions with a leg injury, but he appeared to recover after treatment. The home side were dominant early on, but with 15 minutes gone Brading nearly scored on their first attack of note. A deep cross from Reeve on the left was headed across goal by Appell at the back post towards Rayner, who won the ball, but saw his looping header hit the top of the crossbar and fall safe. Fareham were soon in control again and went close with a shot and a header that both went narrowly over the bar. It was no surprise when the home side finally took the lead after 34 minutes when a left wing cross found Chapman coming in from the right and his first time strike flew past McCormack.

Fareham did not slacken off after this opening goal and hit the bar themselves with a long range effort from Austin. With two minutes remaining before the half-time interval the hosts added a second when a fine shot on the turn from Austin deflected over McCormack into the net. HT 2-0.

The second half started similar to the first with Fareham on the attack and they should of scored when Lindsay was put clean through, but placed his shot wide. Brading to their credit never allowed their heads to drop and with a better final ball might have pulled a goal back. Midway through the half Sunsburg replaced Appell. With five minutes left the home side were guilty of missing a great chance when confusion between McCormack and his defence left Austin with the goal at his mercy, but he pulled his shot wide. The final whistle caused great celebration in the Fareham camp as it was the first time they had beaten Brading in a league after eight attempts. FT 2-0.

BRADING TOWN RES 4 v 2 Whitecroft & Barton Sports.

As seen by Stan Dupp.

Goals from Danny VALE 2 & Scott JONES 2 gave Brading Town reserves a comfortable win…

Brading kicked up the slope and from the off showed their attacking intentions, both Vale & Jones carving out several chances as they ran at the heart of the W&B defence. The W&B keeper kept them in the game with several good saves, goal-line clearances and the aid of the woodwork. Brading were restricting W&B to sporadic breaks, it was on one of these rare breaks that W&B took the lead with their first goal attempt and was totally against the run of play. Brading continued to attack but were unable to convert any of their numerous goal attempts. H/T 0-1.

No changes during the break…Brading continued to attack and within minutes of the restart, VALE was put thro by a fine pass from Lawson and he hammered home a lovely strike from the edge of the box. Brading were now totally on top but were still spurning chances. At last the they took the lead when VALE found space in the box and he made it 2-1. 10 mins later and some poor defending allowed W&B to find space down the left and the resulting cross sneeked in under the bar, W&B’s 2nd attempt on goal…2-2.

“Hitch” brought on new signing’s Franklin & Crabbe for their debuts and Barsdell, Barsdell almost scoring with his first touch..Although W&B had equalised, Brading were showing no intentions of settling for a draw, Val & Jones were causing all sorts of problems down the right and it was from here that JONES made it 3-2 and mins later JONES finished another good move to make it 4-2, both cracking strikes that left the keeper helpless.

A very good result and throughly deserved victory, one where W&B could count themselves lucky to not have lost by a much heavier margin.

Bemerton Heath Harlequins 2 v 0 BRADING TOWN.

As reported by WES ESSEX.

An improved performance from the Romans was not enough to prevent a 2-0 defeat at second placed Bemerton Heath Harlequins on Saturday.

Brading crossed the Solent without manager Steve Brougham due to family commitments, leaving his assistant Steve Greening in charge for the afternoon. He was ably supported by Roger McCormack, father of Joe, who’s vast experience in the game can only benefit the players. With the three senior teams stretched to the limit the Romans only had two substitutes plus Steve Greening. Danny Hatcher was still injured, but Ollie Fleming returned to the line-up after his midweek rest and Danny Reeve was on the bench after his two match suspension.

Brading kicked off on a first class pitch that had won Bemerton an award from the FA for the best ground and groundsman in the country for 2009, in steps five and six. The early stages were evenly contested and it took 20 minutes for the first chance to be carved out,  Buckett created some space for himself on the edge of the box and his shot went inches wide. Przespolewski had the next chance when he got in behind the Bemerton defence after a long ball, but his effort was easily saved by the keeper. The home side then made some opportunities for themselves, firstly McCormack was called into action twice in a matter of seconds, palming away a dangerous cross heading towards the top corner, before saving low down, the returning cross from the other side. Bemerton then had a dangerous free-kick 40 yards out that found an unmarked head in the box, but the header went wide. Just after the half hour mark the visitors came the closest to taking the lead, a long clearance from McCormack into the penalty box was allowed to bounce over his shoulder by Przespolewski before cracking the ball on the volley and the keeper could only watch as it thudded against the crossbar before being cleared. HT 0-0.

Brading fell behind ten minutes into the second half when a free kick was only cleared as far as Slade on the edge of the box and his first time strike flew past McCormack into the bottom corner. The Romans immediately went on the attack to search for an equaliser and forced 3 corners in quick succession, but desperate defending kept them at bay. With 25 minutes left Greening made a double substitution bringing Reeve and Sprooles on for Appell and Przespolewski. The changes nearly paid dividends when the Bemerton keeper hesitated in coming for a long ball and Miles nipped in, his shot was blocked by the keeper at close range, but the ball fell to Buckett but his attempted lob was again saved by the keeper. Ten minutes before the end Sprooles found some space in the box, but his shot lacked power and the keeper comfortably collected the ball. Five minutes later the game was over for the Romans when the hosts got a second, a long ball down the right was not cleared, the ball was fired across the box and Bemerton substitute Puckett forced the ball home. FT 2-0.

BRADING TOWN RES 2 v 0 Ventnor.

As seen by a passing mole-catcher.

Brading inflicted a first league defeat on leader’s Ventnor. Ventnor kicked down the slope, with a strong wind at their backs. They started brightly and had the upper hand of the opening skirmish’s. Brading gradually got their game going and things were pretty equal. Both keepers were relatively quiet with both sets of central defenders protecting their respective keepers. Tackles from both sides were fierce, unfortunately one or two of Ventnor’s were not “legal”….HT 0-0.

The 2nd half started well for Brading as they tried to use the slope and wind to their advantage, Brading now had the upper hand, but Ventnor were not going to roll over, as several tackles showed….referee Mr. Brunt, who was having a good game was forced to produce some yellow cards as things became inflamed and Brading forced their opponents onto the back foot.

Midway the thro the half and Ventnor were reduced to 10 men, after their captain swore at the lino…Brading immediately missed a couple of chances and it looked like one of those afternoons. The game was again stopped when the ref sent off another Ventnor player for a late and nasty tackle..from this point it was all Brading and they punished Ventnor with goals from Sunsburg and Hitchcox, several other chances were spurned and their keeper made some good stops, one in particular was a superb diving save from Collins. Full Time 2-0.

BRADING TOWN 0 v 1 Moneyfields.

The loss of Hatcher (??) Reeve (ban) Armstrong  (injury) Jones (injury) and skipper Fleming confined to the bench (injury) did not help matters. Roper & Henderson are both long term injuries, but both are now out of plaster.

A very scrappy goal was enough to win this game for Moneyfields. Although chances or even half chances were very hard to come by, Brading had the better ones. One being kept out following an excellent save from the Moneyfields keeper.

Miles, who is improving weekly as the season goes on, was very unlucky when his crisp shot, following an excellent run, smashed against the bar and bounced clear.

Moneyfields, as always, battled away and played some nice football and were always in the game, but created little in the box.

Not a game for the purists, with the referee’s whistle constantly piercing a cool evening down the “lane”.

17th Oct, 3 out of 3 for the senior sides.

BRADING TOWN 5 v 3 Alresford Town.

( Hatcher 2, Buckett 1, Prez 2 )

As reported by WES ESSEX.

Three goals in the opening eleven minutes set up a convincing 5-3 win for Brading Town against Alresford Town.

Steve Brougham’s side went into the game full of confidence after encouraging performances in their last two games and were further lifted by the return of keeper McCormack following a four week lay off. Having rested players on Wednesday, Brading welcomed back  Appell, Hatcher and Fleming, Stuber was unavailable. In Stuber’s absence, 16 year old Jake Younie made his full debut playing alongside Fleming. The ever willing Quigley moved to left back in place of the suspended Reeve. Ford was seeing out the final weekend of his ban. Armstrong, Henderson, Roper & Greening are all still on the injured list.

The Romans chose to kick downhill in the first half and spent the first six minutes defending with Alresford taking advantage of the hosts nervy start. In the 6th minute Brading took the lead with their first attack when a long clearance found HATCHER on the right, he burst into the box and committed the keeper who forced him wide from where he  rifled in a low shot from the acutest of angles. Four minutes later Brading doubled their lead when a good move finished with Hatcher crossing for PREZESPOLEWSKI to power home a headed goal. Within a minute it was 3-0 when BUCKETT was put through and he deftly chipped the ball over the advancing keeper into the net. The visitors were clearly stunned, but to their credit they battled on and just after the half hour mark pulled a goal back through Daunter, following a quick break. Any hopes Alresford had of getting back in the game were dashed two minutes before the interval when HATCHER again took on his full back and fired in an unstoppable drive. HT 4-1.

The second half started much quieter than the first with no side threatening a goal early on. Brougham made his first and only change with 20 minutes left when the ever improving  Miles was replaced by Sprooles. Two minutes later the visitors were reduced to ten men when a clumsy tackle on Quigley resulted in a second yellow for Eyles, followed immediately by a red. The decision clearly upset him because as he exited to the dressing room he smashed the entrance door glass with his fist. The sending off seemed to inspire Alresford as they hit the post and forced a great save from McCormack in the last ten minutes. They finally pulled a goal back when a goalmouth scramble enabled Davis to force the ball home. Brading reacted immediately to restore their 3 goal league when another Hatcher cross was headed in by PREZESPOLEWSKI. Initially the ball appeared to have bounced clear after hitting the underside of the bar, but the observant assistant referee put up his flag to confirm it had crossed the line. The visitors did get a consolation goal in the last minute through Dawson, but Brading were comfortable winners and will be looking forward to the home game on Wednesday against Moneyfields following this display. FT 5-3.

Wessex League Cup.

BRADING TOWN 1 v 2 Fareham Town.

A debut goal from Chris BRIDGES was not enough to take Brading into the next round of the league cup.

The opening half an hour was as good and competitive game seen down the “Lane” this season. Both sides giving a good account of themselves. Brading deservedly took the lead thro Bridges..Fareham came into the game more in the last 15 mins of the half and took the lead 1-2.

In the 2nd half Brading were incomplete control for most of the half, but were unable to find the elusive equaliser they fully deserved.

Brading’s display was just what Steve Brougham wanted, several players were still injured/rested but the lads who came in, did very well indeed. Not least Prez, who had his best game so far and was unlucky not to find the net. A constant thorn for Fareham.

Take a bow…..

Alton Town 1 v 4 BRADING TOWN.

Goals from Ollie BUCKETT 2, Simon ARMSTRONG & an OG, gave Brading the much needed win that they have strived for over recent weeks. Hopefully the tide has now changed, after weeks of injuries, illness & down right bad luck that have blighted Steve Brougham’s early season’s plans.

Well done to all the player’s who have stuck with it through this lean spell, especially those who have played through the pain barrier and those who have played when ill, take a bow!!

Let’s look forward to the next game and hopefully 3 more points.

Match report from WES ESSEX.

Brading Town came from behind with four second half goals to gain a richly deserved 1 v 4 win at Alton Town on Saturday.

The Romans arrived at Alton looking for their first away win of the season and made three changes from the side that lost at home to Romsey the previous Saturday. Ian Lloyd started between the sticks as Joe McCormack had still not fully recovered from his head injury and Andy Payne was unavailable due to work commitments. Ross Phelps returned to the starting line-up with Will Quigley moving to partner Ollie Fleming in central defence following an injury to Dean Stuber in training. Joe Rayner who suffered a back injury in the warm-up last week returned to the side in the place of Alek Przespolewski (illness).

The game started with Brading confidently knocking the ball around earning a succession of corners although the closest they came was a header from Rayner, rising above everyone to head just wide. On twenty minutes a ball over the top found Buckett in space, but with the keeper coming out quickly his attempted lob went over the bar. The front two of Buckett and Sprooles were working hard, ably supported by the flair of  Hatcher. With Brading having so much possession it was totally against the run of play when the home side took the lead just before the half-hour mark. A quick break left the defence two on one at the back giving Corbett a simple chance to score with only Lloyd to beat. With seven minutes left before half-time a swift move let in Reeve to bomb down the left only for him to be up-ended outside the box. The resultant free kick was taken by Hatcher and with the Alton players expecting a cross he fired a shot that cracked the crossbar with the keeper nowhere. Minutes later it was Hatcher again with a shot that whistled past the post. The main talking point of the game came a minute before half-time when Alton’s Rayner surged into the box and appeared to go down rather theatrically after a challenge from Quigley. The referee standing close by waved away the protests for a penalty, duly booking the Alton Player for a dive and showed him his second yellow card followed by the red. HT 1-0.

The second half started with the 10 man hosts showing more desire to push forward and Alton’s Miambo caused the Brading defence some worrying moments. In the 52nd minute the visitors finally got the goal they deserved, a 25 yard strike from Hatcher was scooped on to the bar from the nervy keeper and BUCKETT following up poked the ball through his legs. The Romans were now looking the likely winners, but it took a fine save from LLoyd to keep out a headed effort.

On the hour mark Jones came on for Miles. The second Brading goal eventually came in the 70th minute when BUCKETT burst through the centre of the home side’s defence and although he appeared to be fouled he managed to slide the ball past the advancing keeper. Manager Steve Brougham made his second substitution immediately afterwards bringing on Armstrong for Sprooles, who had worked his socks off all afternoon. Armstrong almost made an instant impact when a fine run and cross from Hatcher down the right found him free at the back post, but his first time volley was blocked by the keeper, on the line. Armstrong was not to be denied though and with nine minutes left added a third. Jones went on a run from his own half before feeding ARMSTRONG to his left, who took the ball past his marker before unleashing a tremendous shot that flew into the net with the keeper floundering. The final minute saw the icing on the cake when Hatcher passed to a forward thrusting Reeve who reached the by-line before crossing the ball into the six yard box, and although Appell was in close attendance the ball went in off a defender’s foot, og.. The final whistle was greeted by cheers from the players and bench alike after their best performance of the season.FT 1-4.

Another Colt makes his bow.

Fast on the heels of Paul Davis, Ben Armstrong made his full “A” team debut at Vicarage Lane yesterday. He played on the left hand side of midfield in the “A” team’s emphatic 5-0 victory which kept them top of Combination 1.

He played the full 90 minutes and also scored 2 terrific goals, and had an excellent all round debut. He was a constant threat down the left side and as well as scoring he linked up well and provided several other opportunities.

Paul Davis again made another substitute appearance and was denied his debut goal by an outstanding save by ex-Romans keeper and friend of the club Stu Pardy. Paul again showed some nice touches and along with Ben are two excellent additions to the club.

Jake Brougham turned in an excellent performance on the right and with young Leo having another very accomplished game in the middle of the back four, the future looks very bright indeed. Ryan Davey gave another hard working performance in midfield in a team that is starting to gel together, very well indeed.

We won’t talk about the 2 penalties that we missed yesterday (both saved by Stu Pardy) but needless to say that the two very experienced players that missed them may be having extra practice !!!!!!

With more player’s stepping up to the reserves and some even getting  first team action, the youngsters will be getting an opportunity in the “A” side, so as said before things are looking very good on the pitch, keep up the good work boys or should I say…Young Men.

Steve Lawton, Chairman of the Colts ( “A” team Goalkeeper yesterday :) )
