BRADING TOWN 1 v 2 Laverstock & Ford.

As reported by WES ESSEX.

A controversial goal 20 seconds from the end of the game, denied Brading Town the point they richly deserved at home to Laverstock and Ford.

Brading went into only their fifth league game of the season looking for a confident, boasting win after failing to score in open play in the last five games. They were once again without the injured Dave Greening and Ross Phelps, but welcomed back Will Quigley and Alex Przespolewski into the squad. Joe McCormack, after suffering a nasty head injury last weekend at Wimborne was sidelined, so the experienced Andy Payne was brought in after transferring from East Cowes Vic the day before.

The Romans played up the slope in the first half on a rock hard pitch making control of the ball difficult. The visitors had the better of the play early on, with their right winger in particular causing problems with his pace, but it was the home side’s Jones who had the first opportunity, when he nipped between a defender and the advancing keeper to lob just over the bar. It was not long before Brading’s new keeper was  brought in to the action when a fiercely struck shot was tipped over the bar. In the twelfth minute the visitors took the lead in strange circumstances when an attempted defensive clearance appeared to strike a Laverstock forward on the head as he was falling to the ground and roll agonisingly pass the wrong footed keeper into the net. Minutes before the interval Williams had a great chance to equalise when he was put clean through, but he chipped over the bar. HT 0-1.

Manager Steve Brougham made a change at half time bringing on Przespolewski for Buckett and he also switched the two full backs over, giving Quigley the responsibility of controlling the right winger. Brading dominated most of the second half and it looked to be another one of those days when Przespolewski was put through with only the keeper to beat, but the keeper saved with his feet. With seven minutes remaining the Romans finally got the goal they deserved when Reeve earned a corner following a good move which started from the back. The corner from the left was met by substitute MILES, who rose majestically above everybody to power his header home. The Romans were now buoyant and Hatcher missed another great chance after being put thro. The visitors were still dangerous and Payne had to make a great reaction save with his legs after a close range strike from a corner. The whole game turned with a minute left on the clock, Brading broke down the left and when the ball was crossed it fell invitingly to Raynor who fired a shot that cannoned off the post and rebounded back into the grateful arms of the Laverstock keeper. Immediately the mainland side went on the attack and a defence splitting pass gave a Laverstock forward, who looked offside, the opportunity to slide the ball under the advancing Payne to finish the game with seconds remaining. At the final whistle the Brading players were still protesting over the disputed winner and Reeve was shown his 2nd yellow card & then the red card. FT 1-2.

Wimborne 2 v 0 BRADING TOWN.

The result of this game became some what secondary after Joe Mac had to recieve lengthy treatment after swallowing his tongue. The game was held up for some 20 mins in the 2nd half, due to this unfortunate injury.

Joe is now back home….

—————————————————————-

Brading Town went down 2-0 away to a strong Wimborne Town side on Saturday, in a game overshadowed by a head injury to keeper Joe McCormack.
The injury occurred in the 65th minute when McCormack collided with a Wimborne forward, when he bravely slid out to intercept a through ball and the attackers knee accidently hit his head knocking him out. As Physio Barry Wade rushed on to the pitch Dean Stuber quickly realised McCormack had swallowed his tongue and retrieved it. The Brading keeper eventually came round and was taken to hospital for tests after a wait of 45 minutes for an ambulance. Later that evening McCormack came out of hospital after being given the all clear.

Brading had arrived at Wimborne with a depleted squad following their FA Cup exit on Wednesday with Dave Greening and Ross Phelps both out with injuries. Josh Appell dropped back into the right back position with Matt Miles coming into midfield and Darren Williams replacing Greening up front. The Romans did welcome back captain Ollie Fleming after being unavailable in midweek. On the bench was Richard Sprooles returning to Brading after a recent spell at Newport and Jake Younie a young prospect from the Reserve side. Two other youngsters Steve Greening and Steve Brougham were also on the bench.

The Romans kicked off and were soon under pressure with Wimborne missing a golden opportunity after only 30 seconds. The first 5 minutes were dominated by the home side and Brading could have been three down in that time. The visitors began to settle after this torrid start, but in the 18th minute it took a superb save from McCormack to push away a powerful strike from a tight angle on the right. On the half hour Brading thought they had scored when Rayner flicked on a long clearance into the path of Jones, but as he rolled the ball past the keeper the assistant referee had his flag up for offside. As the end of the first half beckoned McCormack pulled off a stunning double save when he first saved low down at his near post from a header and then palmed away the follow up for a corner. HT 0-0.

Five minutes into the second half the deadlock was broken when a long diagonal pass, left to right, found the excellent Joyce on the right edge of the penalty box, he instantly controlled the ball, moved inside and slipped the ball under the advancing McCormack. With 25 minutes remaining came the injury to McCormack and there was a 45 minute delay before the game restarted with Williams taking the gloves from the unfortunate keeper, Sprooles came on as substitute. The delay seemed to effect the home side with introduction of Sprooles causing their defence problems with his pace. In the 70th minute a ball over the top found Sprooles racing through again only to be stopped in his tracks by a reckless challenge from the Wimborne keeper and the referee had no hesitation in sending him off. Brading were now on top and it needed a fine stretch from the substitute keeper to keep out an attempted lob from Sprooles. Jake Younie came on with 15 minutes left for the hard working Miles. With the Romans pressing for an equaliser they were caught out by a Wimborne breakaway, ending with a simple chance for Green who made it 2-0. The visitors still kept going and a Jones header caused the keeper problems as Reeve rushed in toe poking the ball narrowly wide. Overall a good performance from a understrength side that overcome a bad start to end up the better team. FT 2-0.

BRADING TOWN 1 v 1 Hallen.

Match report by WES ESSEX.

Brading Town were forced into a replay after a 1-1 draw in the First Qualifying round of the FA Cup, after failing to take their chances against Western League side Hallen.

Manager Steve Brougham was once again without key players, Alex Prezpolewski & Darren Williams joining the long list of players unavailable, although he was pleased to welcome back Adam Sunsburg on the bench for the first time since the extra preliminary game against Fairford Town. There were five changes from the side that lost 2-0 at Romsey in midweek, Joe McCormack was back in goal with Ross Phelps and Danny Reeve returning as full-backs, Ollie Buckett came in for Prezpolewski and Scott Jones started up front along side Dave Greening in place of Williams. Although Hallen were struggling in the league, the Romans knew it was going to be a tough game, as they had comprehensively beaten Lymington Town 4-0 in the previous round.

On a blustery afternoon, Brading kicked off down the slope in the first half, with the wind against them. It was Roman’s keeper McCormack who was first in action when a free-kick awarded just outside the box was well hit, forcing McCormack to tip the ball over the bar.

Brading were soon on the offensive and it took a fine smothering save from Scannelle in the Hallen goal to deny Greening, after his pace caused panic in visitor’s defence. The Roman’s were looking dangerous and it took another flying save from Scannelle to keep out a 25 yard strike from Hatcher. The game began to settle down after these early chances with Brading dominating most of the possession.

With minutes remaining of the opening half it was Greening again who went close to scoring after breaking free into the box, but the Hallen keeper came to their rescue once more with a brave save at the strikers feet. HT 0-0.

The second half started as the first finished, with Brading on top. In the opening minutes Jones had a long range effort that caused the keeper all sorts of problems as it bounced in front of him, but somehow kept it out with his chest. The next chance came after Hatcher sped down the right flank before putting in a dangerous cross that flew off a Hallen defender’s boot, but went straight into the arms of the keeper, when either side of him would have resulted in a goal.

The pressure on the Hallen goal continued and a cross from the right was headed down by Jones into the path of Reeve, but his shot went wide. In the 72nd minute the goal Brading deserved came, neat footwork from Greening in the penalty box drew a rash challenge and the ref had no hesitation in pointing to spot. HATCHER stepped up and struck the ball low to the keeper’s left and although the keeper got a hand to the ball, it had too much pace for him to keep it out.

Brading looked well worth their lead until eight minutes later when hesitancy in Roman’s penalty box resulted in Anyinsah being fouled in the box, Cook stepped up to comfortably beat McCormack low to his right. There was still time for a couple more opportunities for Brading, firstly a poor clearance from the Hallen keeper landed at Greening’s feet, but his strike from just inside the opponents half went well wide of the open goal. The second chance fell to the hard working Appell after a corner found him at the back post, but the keeper blocked his effort and the chance was gone. The final whistle came as a relief to the visiting side who will obviously fancy their chances on home territory, but Brading, the only Wessex League side left in this year’s competition, can take a lot of heart from this performance and are still very much in the tie. FT 1-1.

With so many 1st teamers being unavailable, it was inevitable that the reserves would also be without key players. A single VALE goal was not enough against a very decent Rookley side.

The result also shows that Div 2 will not be anyone’s walk in the park.
